The toughest part about catching this problem is the sheer amount of clothes children produce every day. A child may come home from school, take off their jeans or khaki pants – with zippers – throw them in the laundry, put on their play jeans – with zippers – and take them off to wear their pajamas at the end of the day.

The easiest way to keeps zippers from damaging your washer is to wash all zippered clothes by hand. Doing so keeps your kids clothes out of the washing machine and prevents at zipper damage. Place a "zipper clothes" hamper in your laundry room for all items with zippers. Wash these by hand by carefully scrubbing them with soapy water and gentle movements.

However, if you don't have time to wash clothes by hand – and who could blame you? – then you need to carefully go through all of your laundry to seek out clothes with zippers. When you find any, make sure that that zipper is pulled all the way up. Typically, this should help to prevent damage to your washer and keep it running smoothly.

And make sure to inspect the inside of your washing machine occasionally to look for signs of damage, such as scratches or tears. Though this type of damage may be small, a zipper may work its way into the mechanics of the washing machine if cracks form around the edges of the interior. When this happens, the zipper may catch and cause more serious damage.
