What You Should Do If Your Washing Machine Has Stopped Draining

Blog

Your washing machine is responsible for washing your clothing and other linens throughout your home whenever necessary. If you don't have a working washing machine though, all of these linens and the clothing can be sitting in a large heap needing to be washed, which can put you behind in your day-to-day chores. If your washing machine is not working properly, as in it is not draining and leaving your clothing/linens soaking wet, it can be a major problem. Read on for what you can do if your washing machine is not draining.

Remove The Standing Water

After you have removed all of the contents of the washing machine, as in the clothing that was once inside, you need to get rid of the water. In a top-loading machine, there could be a lot of water inside. In a front-loading machine, there may not be as much water, although it's still a problem. If your machine still has water in it, no matter what type, you need to remove the water. Use a bucket, bowl, cup, or hose to get the water out so you can make any necessary repairs to the machine.

Remove The Lint

There may be a lint trap on your machine that is blocking the flow of water out of your machine. You can remove the lint trap and remove any and all contents from the lint trap to allow for proper drainage. If your machine doesn't have a lint trap, there could still be lint in the machine, and it needs to be removed. You can remove the drain line to see if it's clogged with lint or other objects, including smaller pieces of clothing that have gotten lodged in the drain line. If you find anything at all, remove it from the drain and check your machine to see if it's working properly. You can check the manufacturer's instructions to see where your lint trap is on your machine in order to remove the lint from the machine.

If your machine has stopped draining water, the problem is usually the lint that has accumulated over time. Remove the water and remove the lint from your machine then check the machine again to see if it's draining properly. If you continue to have an issue with your machine, you should call an appliance repair professional to help you make the repairs necessary to your appliance to get it working again.
