3 Common Refrigerator Issues You Can Repair On Your Own

Blog

You want your appliances to last a long time, but there may come a time when your appliances breakdown and you're left scrambling trying to figure out what to do with your food, laundry, or dishes. A refrigerator breakdown can be a major issue, as you may have a lot of food that could potentially go bad if it breaks down. This is especially true if you are someone that stocks up on food. Read on for a few common issues and how to repair them yourself.

1. Warm Food

Warm food is not what you want to find in your refrigerator or freezer. If you are finding that you have warm spots, it may be because of a blockage of the air flow inside the refrigerator. If you have too much food in your refrigerator, you could be preventing the air from flowing around your refrigerator properly, which can create pockets of warm air. If this the case, you should clean out your refrigerator and remove anything you don't need. Alternatively, you could add a second refrigerator, if you need to, in order to make room in your current refrigerator.

Another reason for warm air in your refrigerator may be because of your door seal. If it isn't sealing properly, it will allow warm air to get inside your appliance. If your door seal is not in good shape, you should replace it with a new one. Simply remove the screws holding the old one in place and install the new one following the manufacturer's instructions.

2. Water Leaking

Water will drip from condensation into a drip pan beneath your refrigerator, but if it's leaking a lot, it may be more than condensation. You could have a different problem. If you have an automatic ice maker or water dispenser, your hose may have come off of the back of the refrigerator. If this is the case, or if the hose has broken at all, you may have leaking water as well. Pull your refrigerator out from the wall to inspect this hose and to see where the water may be coming from. Replace this hose if it is damaged. If it's not damaged, make sure it's installed correctly and tightly in place.

3. No Ice

If your refrigerator that typically gives you ice on demand is suddenly not giving you any ice any longer, it could be a few different problems. If there is ice in the door, but it isn't being dispensed, the machine could be frozen. Empty the holding bin completely and inspect the dispenser. Make sure there aren't any chunks of ice inside that need to be removed, if so, remove them. If you don't have ice in the holding bin, it means ice isn't making it to the door at all. Check the dispenser in the freezer to see if there is any ice stuck in the dispenser, and remove it as needed. If this wasn't the case, your ice maker may not be getting any water. Check your water dispenser to see if water comes out of it. If you don't get water from the dispenser, check the hose at the back and repair or replace it as needed. If you get water, it means just the ice maker is having an issue. You may need to replace the ice maker itself. This is something you should leave to a professional repairman.

These are just a few of the common refrigerator issues you may encounter. If you have an issue you aren't able to repair yourself, or if you don't even want to attempt it on your own, consult an refrigerator repair company in your area for help.
